THE SOLEMN INAUGURATION OF SANTA CRUZ CHURCH (FROM "EL TUCSONENSE", SATURDAY, FEB 1, 1919)
The Catholic Society of Tucson finds itself with may well-wishes in view that beginning from Sunday the ninth instant, can count with a new church in a new prayer location from which to plead for the Divine Mercy of God, our Savior. On this date, 9th February, 1919 the Church of Santa Cruz will be inaugurated, which, due to the zeal of Bishop Henri Granjon of Tucson, has been built on 22nd Street for the benefit of the people south of this city. At the finish of the present informative note we will publish the program which is due to be carried out as a result of the inauguration of which we are speaking and for which there is a great and true enthusiasm for such a solemn act. The temple with which we are concerned is of solid construction, beautiful and severe. Its construction has been directed by Bishop Granjon personally and the work has been entrusted, since the beginning, to the intelligent contractor, Senor Manuel G. Flores, who has been able to satisfy all the details of the work that, as we said before, with an aggregate, agreeable and beautiful. This temple is dedicated to the service of the Carmelite Order, who will take charge immediately, having to, in the least possible time, begin the labour of education in the Education department, the which, contiguous to the church and the monastery, has been built for the good of the youth of the southern part of the city. The Reverend Carmelite Fathers who no serve on the Church of the Holy Family are the ones who will receive the Santa Cruz church, returning again the former to the Diocese of Tucson. The raising of temples and schools to enable them to give shelter to those who ask for Divine Grace and for those who within the holy religion seek the salutary nourishment of the intellect and soul, is noble, very noble, and for this, in a manner most frank, most sincere, and very real, congratulate the Lord Bishop of Tucson, His Excellency Henri Granjon who has personally taken the greatest pains that the work of the temple of Santa Cruz be completed as soon as possible. Similarly we congratulate the inhabitants of this city who live in the South side, for continuing now with a new place of prayer. At 9:45 a.m., the Most Illustrious and Reverend Lord, Doctor of Divinity, Henri Granjon, Bishop of Tucson will begin the Solemn Blessing of the church. The ceremony finished, the faithful may enter the church and Solemn Pontifical Mass will be celebrated by the same Illustrious Lord Bishop with a sermon by the Reverend Father Lucas de San Jose C.D. At 4:30 p.m., Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. There will be a Rosary with sung Mysteries. Sermon by the Rev. Justino de Santa Teresa, C.D., and Benediction. Reporter: Tomas O. Belada
